Why Your Hair Extensions Never Looked Right

You spent the money. You sat in the chair. You walked out expecting to love your hair.

Then you caught your reflection in a shop window.

The colour looked off. The roots looked bulky. Or worse, you could see exactly where your natural hair ended and the extensions began.

After more than 20 years working with hair extensions, I can tell you that most extension problems start long before the hair is fitted. They start with the wrong recommendation.

Here are five of the most common reasons extensions don't look right.

1. The colour was matched indoors

Salon lighting can make almost any colour look good.

Natural daylight tells the truth.

A shade that looks perfect under salon lights can suddenly look too warm, too dark or completely wrong once you're outside. Colour should always be checked in natural daylight before any final decision is made.

2. The method wasn't right for your hair

Not every extension method works for every head of hair.

Tape extensions can work beautifully on fine hair. Genius wefts are often better for women looking for more volume and density.

Choosing a method because it's popular isn't enough. It has to suit your hair, your lifestyle and your goal.

3. The weight was too heavy

Fine hair can only support so much weight.

When extensions are too heavy, the result is often visible attachment points, discomfort and unnecessary strain on the natural hair.

More hair doesn't always mean a better result.

4. Nobody asked about your lifestyle

Do you swim?

Go to the gym regularly?

Wash your hair frequently?

Use oils near your roots?

These things matter.

A method that works perfectly for one person can become frustrating for someone with a completely different routine.

5. The length was unrealistic

One of the biggest mistakes I see is choosing a length that doesn't blend with the client's natural hair.

The longer the extension, the more important the blend becomes.

Going too long too quickly often creates a visible line between your hair and the extensions, no matter how good the hair quality is.

The common problem

Most of these issues come back to one thing.

Nobody asked enough questions before recommending the hair.

That's why we start with your hair first.

Your density. Your colour. Your lifestyle. Your goal.

Once we understand those things, recommending the right extensions becomes much easier.
