What a Hair Extension Consultation Should Actually Feel Like

A consultation shouldn't feel like a sales pitch.

It should feel like someone trying to understand your hair.

Over the years I've seen plenty of consultations that last less than a minute.

A quick look at the hair.

A colour ring held against the head.

A recommendation made almost immediately.

That's not a consultation.

It should start with your goal

Before talking about methods, colours or lengths, the first question should be simple.

What are you trying to achieve?

More volume?

More length?

A fuller ponytail?

A wedding hairstyle?

The goal comes first.

The method comes later.

It should ask the right questions

A proper consultation should cover:

  • Hair density
  • Previous colour history
  • Previous extension experience
  • Hair condition
  • Areas of weakness or breakage

Every answer affects the recommendation.

It should ask about your lifestyle

How often do you wash your hair?

Do you swim?

Do you go to the gym?

How much time do you spend styling your hair?

The right method for one person can be completely wrong for another.

It should be honest

Sometimes the best advice isn't what a client wants to hear.

Sometimes a different method is needed.

Sometimes less hair is needed.

Sometimes extensions aren't the right solution right now.

Good advice isn't about making a sale.

It's about getting the right result.

What should you leave with?

A clear understanding of:

  • Which method suits your hair
  • Why it suits your hair
  • What maintenance is involved
  • What result you can realistically expect

That's exactly how we approach things at Hair Buyers Club.
