Tape Extensions vs Genius Wefts — The Honest Comparison Nobody Gives You

This is probably the question I get asked most.

Should I choose tape extensions or genius wefts?

The answer depends entirely on your hair and what you're trying to achieve.

Tape Extensions

Tape extensions sit flat against the head and are one of the most discreet extension methods available.

When fitted correctly, they're comfortable, lightweight and blend exceptionally well.

Best for

  • Fine to medium hair
  • Adding length
  • Natural everyday wear
  • Clients who want minimal bulk

Maintenance

Tape extensions generally need moving every 6–8 weeks as your hair grows.

Things to consider

If you regularly use oils near your roots or struggle to keep up with maintenance appointments, tape extensions may not be the best choice.

Genius Wefts

Genius wefts are designed for women who want more volume, more density and a fuller overall result.

The weft itself is extremely thin, allowing a lot of hair to be added without creating excessive bulk.

Best for

  • Medium to thick hair
  • Adding volume and density
  • Longer-term wear
  • Clients wanting a fuller result

Maintenance

Most clients return every 8–10 weeks depending on their natural hair growth.

Things to consider

Very fine or fragile hair may not comfortably support the weight of a weft installation.

So which one is right for you?

If your priority is natural-looking length on fine hair, tape extensions are often the better choice.

If your priority is volume, density and a fuller look, genius wefts are usually the stronger option.

The best method isn't the most expensive one.

It's the one that suits your hair.
