By Marina | Hair Buyers Club | Expert hair extension advice since 2001
If you've ever bought hair extensions and felt that sinking feeling — the colour was slightly off, they slipped out within weeks, or they just didn't blend — you're not alone. I've spent 23 years watching women make the same expensive mistakes, and it's the reason I built Hair Buyers Club.
This guide will tell you exactly how to choose the right hair extensions for your hair type, your lifestyle, and your budget. No jargon. No upselling. Just honest advice from someone who has seen everything go wrong — and knows how to make it go right.
Why Most Women Buy the Wrong Extensions (And Why It's Not Their Fault)
The hair extension industry has a problem. Walk into most salons or browse most online shops and you'll be met with a wall of options, a pushy recommendation, or a vague quiz that ends with "all hair types!" — followed by a sale.
Nobody actually asks you the important questions:
- What's your hair density right now?
- Are you colour-treated or chemically processed?
- Do you want extensions for a single event or daily wear?
- What's your budget — not just for buying, but for maintaining?
Without those answers, any recommendation is a guess. And guesses, in this industry, cost women hundreds of pounds.
I've seen it happen thousands of times. Fine hair paired with the wrong weight. Bleached hair fitted with extensions that caused breakage. Clip-ins bought for a wedding that didn't last the first dance. Tape extensions purchased for someone whose lifestyle meant they'd be at the gym every day.
The result? Damaged hair. Wasted money. And a woman who swears she'll never try extensions again.
The Four Questions You Must Answer Before Buying Any Hair Extensions
1. What is your natural hair like right now?
This is where everything starts — not with the extension type, not with the length you want. Your natural hair density, texture, and condition determines which extensions will work for you and which ones will cause damage or look unnatural.
Fine hair needs lighter-weight extensions and a method that distributes weight evenly. Overloading fine hair causes traction and breakage.
Thick or coarse hair needs enough volume in the extensions to blend seamlessly — too little and the join will always be visible.
Colour-treated or bleached hair is more fragile. Some extension methods (particularly those involving heat bonds) can cause additional stress to already-compromised hair.
2. What result do you actually want?
There's a difference between wanting more length and wanting more volume. There's a difference between wanting a subtle enhancement and wanting a dramatic transformation. There's a difference between extensions for your wedding day and extensions for every day.
The method you choose should match the result you're after — not the other way around.
3. How much maintenance can you realistically commit to?
Be honest with yourself here. Some extension methods require salon visits every 6–8 weeks. Some require specific washing techniques, heat protectant, and careful drying. Some aren't compatible with certain gym routines or swimming habits.
The most beautiful extensions in the world become a problem if they don't fit your real life.
4. What is your total budget?
Not just the purchase price — the full cost including fitting, maintenance, and the cost of removal if needed. Premium extensions fitted correctly will always outlast cheap extensions fitted incorrectly. But you need to know what you're actually committing to before you buy.
The Main Extension Types — And Who They're Actually Right For
Tape Extensions
Tape extensions are applied in thin, sandwiched sections using a medical-grade adhesive. They lie flat against the head, making them one of the most natural-looking methods available.
They work best for: women with fine to medium hair who want a seamless, natural result for daily wear. They're lightweight, comfortable, and when applied correctly, almost undetectable.
They require: re-taping every 6–8 weeks as your natural hair grows. The tape bonds need to be removed and repositioned by a professional.
They're not ideal for: very thick, coarse hair (the tape sections may not lay flat) or women who regularly use heavy oils near the roots (which can break down the adhesive).
Genius Wefts
Genius weft extensions are ultra-thin, flat weft pieces that are sewn or bonded to the hair. They're known for exceptional volume and thickness, and they're virtually invisible when applied correctly.
They work best for: women who want genuine volume and thickness, not just length. Also ideal for women who want a longer-wearing solution between salon visits.
They require: professional application and maintenance. Not a DIY method.
They're not ideal for: very fine hair where the added weight could cause strain.
Clip-in Extensions
Clip-ins are the only method you can apply and remove yourself. They clip in at the roots using small pressure combs and are removed at the end of the day (or whenever you choose).
They work best for: occasional wear — events, nights out, photoshoots. Women who want flexibility without commitment.
They're not ideal for: daily wear (the repeated clipping can cause tension on the hairline over time) or women who want something permanent and low-maintenance.
Why I Started Hair Buyers Club
I've worked in and around the hair extension industry for 23 years. For most of that time, I watched the same pattern repeat: a woman walks in with a dream, walks out with the wrong product, and ends up worse off than when she started.
The problem wasn't always the extensions. It was the process — or the lack of it. Sales-driven recommendations. No proper assessment. No honest conversation about what would and wouldn't work.
Hair Buyers Club exists to fix that. Before you buy anything from us, we want to understand your hair. Not so we can sell you more — so we can make sure what you buy actually works. That's why every customer has access to a free, detailed hair assessment before they purchase. It takes about five minutes, and it gives us everything we need to make a recommendation we'd stand behind.
The Hair Buyers Club Promise
We will never recommend an extension method that isn't right for your hair. We will never push you towards a higher price point than you need. And if we genuinely think extensions aren't right for you right now, we'll tell you that too.
